"The whole town's gotta go…"
Meet the little village of Atterwasch, Germany and the folks who live there. Atterwasch is slated for demolition – the whole town, including the church originally built in the 1200s. It's a casualty of Germany's Energiewende, the most ambitious transformation of a country's energy sector ever attempted.
Germany's plan to shut down all their nuclear reactors has had other unintended consequences as well, most notably increased burning of brown coal, the direct cause of Atterwasch's plight.
Join scholar Johan Norberg as he explores the Energiewende, along with other world energy issues like ethanol and fracking, both of which have also had consequences not anticipated – some good, others not so good.
Who chooses our energy solutions? And how can we make better decisions?
Energy Solutions – Who Chooses? covers numerous educational standards across several subject areas including Science and Social Studies for Grades 7-12.
